MARY  RIVER  LIONS  CLUB  INC.

‘YOUTH  OF  THE  YEAR  CLUB   JUDGING

The Club judging of the Youth of the Year was held on Wednesday, 28 February in conjunction with the Granville Lions club Inc.  The judging format covered two sections.

The student entrants were interviewed privately by three judges who questioned them on their Leadership qualities, sporting participation and achievements, cultural and community interests as well as their personality, general knowledge and Academic results.  This session accounted for 80% of the allocated points.  The evening session which is worth 15 points included the Public Speaking (each contestant being asked to speak for two minutes on two Impromptu questions) plus a five minute prepared speech, was open to all Club members, the students parents and friends as well as the school staff.  To round off the judging, 5 points was awarded for Diction making a total maximum of 100 points.

We were fortunate to have two extremely high personable academic students – Angela Faint (School Captain) Maryborough State High School and Annabelle Franklin from Aldridge State High School to represent our Club.  Annabelle took out the Public Speaking Award while Angela was awarded the Overall.

Being the Overall winner of our Club, Angela again represented us at the Zone judging in Hervey Bay which was held on Saturday, 10 March.  Here she was successful in winning the Public Speaking Award and gained an overall placing to carry on to Regional Level.  Unfortunately, due to family commitments, Angela could not carry on to the next level.

We thank Angela for carrying the banner for us particularly under the sad circumstances.  Condolences were passed on from the Club upon the death of her Grandfather who was buried later that week.

WORKING  WITH  THE  AGED

Saint Patrick’s Day – Saturday 17 March was a very busy day for the members of the Club as they firstly hosted a sit-down luncheon for 75 independent living residents of Chelsea R.S.L. retirees’ home in Maryborough.  While the women attended to the salads and sweets, the men slaved over the B.B.Q’s (three of them) to cook 3 kgs onions, 90 sausages and 85 steakettes.  Of course, the talk was punctuated with a little “brown” fluid from a little brown bottle which helped make their arduous task seem much easier.

Jokes aside, the residents thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the Irish jokes after the meal were quite entertaining.  The singing was a little off key at times, but the smiles on the faces of our husband and wife members who won the major prize in the raffle was well worth seeing.  (It was noted that they didn’t offer anyone a banana.)  The next function they are looking forward to from our Club is “Christmas in July”.

ST.  PATRICK’S  DAY  DANCE

If catering for the elderly on St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t enough for our Club, we also had our turn to conduct the weekly Saturday evening Old-time Dance.

Our recycled member, Terry, thought it would be a good idea to tempt the residents who attend the weekly Tinana Dance with something a little different – hence we had shamrocks growing on the walls, Leprechauns doing dances in the breeze from the fans – but wait for it – no green “Guiness” in sight so a large container of “green” cordial was placed beside the usual cold water container.  What a let down to the genuine Irish.  Almost enough to go catching and returning the snakes that St. Patrick chased away.

We did offer a few prizes for the bet dressed Colleen, etc. which were well received.  The shock of the night was the production of our wonderful pikelets (always superbly cooked by a well-known Councillor) sitting on her trays, looking a “gangrenous” green – like men from our-of-space – with a dollop of red jam on top and finished with her snow-white dairy fresh cream.

Oh well, after these couple of exciting events; guess it’s time for the Club to settle back and get on with the next mundane fund-raising B.B.Q. at the usual Market.
