Connections; Naturally! Skills for Life
Opportunties for our ageing community!
Our Connections, Naturally! Skills for Life program is designed for the over 50’s amongst us.
Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland explains that: An age-friendly community enables older people to live healthy active lives, where they are:
• connected to their community and the people and the services that matter to them
• supported by world class frontline services when support is needed, and
• celebrated for the contribution they make as carers, workers, volunteers and community leaders.
Age-friendly communities are designed to support the well-being and participation of older people. They promote inclusion, participation and contribution of all people in all areas of community life.
CONNECTIONS, Naturally! : Skills for Life, will be a series of workshops delivered over a period of 12 months, focused on learning and improving skills, in our aged community, for longevity and a better quality of life.
Why is this project important?
Studies have shown the numerous benefits of outdoor activities and social connections
for mental, physical, cognitive and emotional well-being. The benefits of nature are also
amplified by sharing the experiences with others! The series is designed to empower
people by strengthening social connections, encouraging participation, building skills, and promoting environmental stewardship.
Getting out in nature, fresh air, sunshine, and being active – although highly beneficial
– can be overwhelming when doing it alone. This project will encourage participants to
break through those barriers by providing a safe, inclusive environment, allowing them to overcome fears and insecurities. The range of activities proposed would encompass local conservation parks, walking trails and boardwalks (including MRL’s own recently completed outdoor learning space) – providing a range of user-friendly outings, catering to the physical needs of participants.
What is the project?
Connections, Naturally! is a series of 5 events, beginning with the program launch during Senior’s month (October) 2026. This year’s Seniors Month theme is “Connect and celebrate”. Simply put it’s “A time to connect and celebrate. Together we shine!”
The planned immersive activities will deepen volunteers’ understanding of local biodiversity, conservation practices, and cultural landscapes.
Each event will enable social connections through shared morning tea or lunch, and learning will take place via guest speakers and experts sharing skills and knowledge.
Creating a hand out for each event with a list of relevant resources for ongoing learning and community connections relating to the topics will provide attendees with take home information and something that they can share with family, friends or neighbours.
